In Syria‚ two hundred and seventeen people have been killed and hundreds more injured when security forces shelled protesters in the city of Homs.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the mortar fire hit the Al Khalidiya district of Homs‚ which has become a flashpoint of the ten month revolt against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. It called for immediate intervention of the Arab League to end the bloodbath in Syria. The violence broke out after thousands of people gathered to mark the 30th anniversary of 1982 massacre by the security forces in the central city of Hama. Meanwhile‚ the UN Security Council has agreed on an amended draft resolution aimed at ending bloodshed in Syria. Russia's Ambassador at the United Nations has said the members are sending the text of the resolution to their respective countries. However the agreement on the resolution does not predetermine its fate in any way.
