As the Russian tanks were on the roll again and moved within 20 kilometres of Gori, the United States has demanded that Russian forces withdraw from Georgia immediately.
The call was made by, the U.S secretary of state Condoleezza Rice after Georgia's president signed an EU-brokered ceasefire deal. In angry comments at a news briefing in Tbilisi, president Mikhail Saakashvili said his country would never accept the loss of any of its territory. However, speaking in Moscow after talks with German chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Georgia's two rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia were unlikely to be part of the Georgian state. In a telephonic talk with US secretary of state, Russian foreign minister said his country will faithfully implement the agreement. The U.N Security Council is also discussing a ceasefire between Moscow and Tbilisi.
