Lawmakers in Nepal have overwhelmingly elected Maoist leader Prachanda as the first republican Prime Minister.
The 53-year-old won eighty percent of votes to defeat his only rival, the congress party candidate, Sher Bahadur Deuba. The vote also ends months of political deadlock that followed the sacking of unpopular king Gyanendra and the abolition of the 240-year-old monarchy.
