The Republican presidential race has turned ugly as the candidates elbow their way towards a crucial month of primary elections.
Adopting a sharper tone, Newt Gingrich said if rival Mitt Romney became the nominee, he would be laughed at by President Barack Obama in TV debates. Ron Paul was forced to repudiate an ad endorsing him and suggesting Jon Huntsman had been brainwashed by China. One of the contenders will challenge Barack Obama in November's election. The candidates will meet for the first televised debate of 2012 on Saturday. Primary votes will be held this month in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida which could well shape the race for the Republican nomination.
