President Asif Ali Zardari says that being a decision-making body‚ the parliament will take a final decision about the NATO supply lines.
In an interview with a private television channel‚ he said credit should be given to political leadership for the bold decisions like blockage of NATO supplies‚ evacuation of Shamsi airbase and boycott of Bonn conference. To a question‚ President Zardari said he has divested all powers to the parliament and now he is to evolve the parliament. He said my advice to the parliament and everybody else is to take care of the country's interest first and then come others. About trade issues with India‚ the President said the trade issues with India should be examined by the Parliament. The President said he wants a discussion with India on water dispute and he will seek the attention of the environmentalists of the world that change in glacier will affect the region. About the difference of opinion between the civilian and military leadership on the memo issue‚ the President said: I think we are playing into the hands of those who want to harm Pakistan and eventually Pakistan will be hurt. To a question regarding clash of institutions‚ the President said‚ it is part of the evolution. This fight will evolve and then it will simmer down. To another question‚ he said elections can be held at any time but with consensus of the parliament and co-partners. Asked if he is prepared to talk to the opposition on early elections‚ the President said he is prepared to talk to the opposition on every subject. To a question if the government is going to hold Senate elections in February‚ the President said‚ it is not our government but a coalition government. And this topic was not discussed with any of the coalition partner. He said there is no fight with the Judiciary and the Army. Asked about the future for Pakistan‚ President Zardari said we are going to be a commercially and financially viable nation. To a question whether party of Imran Khan is supported by the establishment‚ the president said it is beneficial and not harmful if more politicians are in the field. Referring the slogan of change raised by Imran Khan‚ President Zardari said the first definition of change is that you bring new people. So you bring new people and people will vote.
