Minister for Information ad Broadcasting, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said that prudent policies and measures adopted by the government have resulted in the reduction of inflation to a single digit of nine percent.

Addressing a press conference after the Federal Cabinet meeting, the minister said that Sensitive Price Index (SPI), Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) have registered decrease as compared to the same period of last year. She said that the Secretary Finance in a briefing apprised the Cabinet that keeping in view the prices of general items and food and non-food items, it was noted that sensitive price index which was reported as 21.6% in December 2010 has reduced to 3% in December 2011. Similarly, she said, the consumer price index which was 15.5% in December 2010 fell to 9.7 % in December 2011, while the Wholesale Price Index also declined to 8.3% in December 2011 as compared to 22.5% in 2010. “This is a healthy sign and a point of satisfaction as inflation is reported in a single digit due to efforts of the present government.” She said the prime minister has directed to make efforts for further reduction in the prices of basic commodities. The prime minister also directed the federal government to assist the provincial governments in reducing the inflation, the minister added.
