The two day nuclear security summit has concluded in Seoul with 57 world leaders reaffirming that measures to strengthen nuclear security will not hamper the rights of states to develop and utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
In his address at the summit in Seoul Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani reiterated the commitment to the objective of enhancing nuclear security saying nuclear security is a national responsibility of every country. He urged the international community to explore space for cooperation on nuclear security through voluntary national actions in pursuance of international obligations. He welcomed the nuclear security summit process terming it a catalyst for fostering nuclear security culture and reiterated its commitment to the objective of enhancing nuclear security. The Prime Minister said the existing international nuclear security framework is quite extensive which covers the measures taken by the international atomic energy agency and the United Nations as well as various conventions and initiatives. There is no need to create new, parallel institutions or mechanisms for nuclear security. He informed the participants that Pakistan nuclear regulatory authority regulates the safety and security of civilian nuclear materials and facilities and works with close cooperation with IAEA. The Prime Minister said Pakistan has more than 37 years of experience in safe reactor operations and ready to assist interested states with the experiences and expertise Pakistan has gained in the areas of nuclear security. He said Pakistan qualifies to become a member of the nuclear suppliers group and export control regimes on a non-discriminatory basis. The world leaders attending the Seoul summit observed that nuclear terrorism continues to be most challenging threat to international security. They sought strong national measures and robust international cooperation to defeat the nuclear terrorists which could pose potential global damage. The next nuclear security summit will be held in Holland in 2014.
