The Senate has adopted three resolutions, unanimously expressing profound concern on the violation of loc, blockade of Srinagar and the threatening statement of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Tabling the first resolution, leader of the house Mian Raza Rabbani said that this house calls upon the government of India to take step for avoiding the recurrence of loc violation. Leader of the opposition Kamil Ali Agha tabled the second resolution regarding the economic blockade of Srinagar by the Hindu extremists. The resolution says that this house will continue its political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people while wishing to have the Kashmir dispute resolved according to the aspirations of Kashmiri people. Tabling the third resolution, leader of the house said that this house deeply regrets the statement of afghan President Hamid Karzai. The house condemned the bombing of Indian embassy in Kabul and the Pakistani consulate in heart. Earlier, winding up the debate on the national security, foreign minister Shah Mahmud Qureshi said we are fully aware of the threats faced by the country. He told the house that foreign policy would be devised in a bipartisan manner keeping in view the national interests. Refuting the opposition’s claim regarding the failure of prime minister’s U.S. Visit, he said we respect their opinion but the factual position is contrary to their accusations. The foreign minister said that we have got bipartisan congressional commitment for fifteen billion dollars in aid which means the money will keep coming to Pakistan irrespective of the party in power.Shah Mahmud Qureshi emphatically made the point that we have not changed the policy on the issue of indo-us nuclear energy pact. He said president bush has categorically stated in front of President Musharraf that Pakistan should not expect to be treated at par with India. Two days later, President Musharraf endorsed Bush’s view, giving India a free hand to pursue the nuclear deal. The foreign minister said that we have made it clear to IAEA that Pakistan is against discrimination pact and precedent setting nuclear between India and the United States. He said our stance is that while taking indo-us deal as a model, Pakistan should be facilitated in getting the civilian nuclear energy. participating in the debate, the members made a passionate appeal to the government to take immediate steps against the extremism and terrorism. They said Talibanization is now spreading to our commercial hub Karachi and if not checked at this stage, it might have dangerous consequences. Some members condemned the alleged maligning of I.S.I. By placing it under the control of interior ministry and then dragging the issue by delaying the reversal of controversial decision. They said, I.S.I. Is our first line of defence and the agency deserves due respect from the people and the government.
