Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas will hold separate meetings with President Obama today,
at the white house ahead of a dinner and the start of direct bilateral negotiations. US envoy George Mitchell said in Washington that the United States will have an "active and sustained role" in upcoming peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians. He said the US president had been determined to secure peace between Israel and the Palestinians ever since taking office. Ahead of the talks the U.S. secretary of state Hillary Clinton met with quartet representative Tony Blair, Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discussed the latest round of peace talks.
